Language variation

It’s a strange thing that I’m writing this post but the thoughts will not stop and refuse all efforts to wait until morning so here goes.

I’m now approaching the awkward teenage phase in my life according to my progress in Greek. It was bad enough doing this the first time around in English and now I have to do it again for Greek?!?!?

It’s excruciatingly painful trying to have meaningful conversation that lasts any longer than γιασυς hi, το κάνε η πος εις how are you, καλά I’m good. Tonight I couldn’t even understand τι νέο what’s new as although I’m used to hearing the person speak English and they are Greek, I’m not used to hearing them speak Greek to me even though they obviously have to for their job and I don’t pay any attention when that happens. “(In fact that’s what another friend says, this one said που πάμε where are you going/have you been?)”

As an aside I sadly can replicate there English voice in my head and have used it to have many conversations with them over the years. I know I’m weird.

I always wondered when I went back to my parents how they had to tune in to how I spoke each time like how could they forget? I wasn’t accounting for my own voice changing which it does frequently. I’ve also been told off for speaking incorrectly but in order to get a new language you have to speak incorrectly as new abilities just don’t turn up out of nowhere.

As a second aside I was never allowed to display any autistic tendencies growing up hence I can do accents better now but there still pretty inauthentic. It’s probably why my diagnosis was so late. I learned to fake it too well.

So now I can have to continue past shop keeper dialogue and basic questions into conversation land. This is a very scary place.

Hopefully this is right what my brain came up with. Ψεματα, πάντα γλυκά λίγο ψεματα “I forget this bit” στόμα σου. Lies, always sweet little lies that come out of your mouth. Σου έχει α γλυκά γλώσσα. You have a honeyed tongue. Actually it’s not but it’s also not nice to be so nasty even though I do get pissed off at the 2 of them; they mean well and there only trying to help.

Other phrases I have thought of later are θέλω ένα παπούτσια γιά μενα τριάντα έξι παρακαλώ after leaving the shoe shop “I want some shoes size thirty six please.” I don’t think that’s entirely correct either.

The ones which got aborted as they got busy were about my latest dinner with friends as I tried twice, once to invite another to that meal and second to say to someone what happened. There too lengthy to put here. At least this is calming and peaceful that someone now knows my latest language struggles.

Stoicism is an Ancient Greek ideal that is gaining popularity at the moment. Here is a good explanation of how it relates to modern life.

C G Karyotakis 1896-1928 Greek poet

I’m sure your all getting the feeling now that the area surrounding Lefkás known for its poetry because of the amount of poets I have so far covered. Also, I rather like poetry which is not a thing you would initially think considering I’m quite logical and a scientist.

This poet deserves a post because I was struck by the beauty of his poetry and he lived such a short life.

He also talks about Preveza, the biggest town in the area. Which from everything I’ve ever heard and seen about the place, hasn’t changed at all and will inspire the same melancholic poetry in yourself. (The poet committed suicide shortly after writing that poem).

Kostas Karyotakis suffered the fate of most people born before there time in that his work was only appreciated after he died. He knew his brilliance but couldn’t convince others so this gave him great pain. This is sometimes reflected in his work especially later on.

He was highly intelligent, studied law and became employed in clerical work which he highly disliked. This comes across in his poems but he was able to revolutionise the way poetry was written so there is always a silver lining to everything in life.

He had syphilis which at the time couldn’t be cured which is mainly responsible for his suffering, inability to settle into any position and therefore constant changing of where he was living.

He was sad, suicidal and unfulfilled for the majority of his life so it’s no surprise that he ended his life rather quickly by shooting himself through the heart under a eucalyptus tree.

This is the sixth post in the series of Greek but mainly Lefkádian writers and poets which includes a bonus post from Sententiae Antiquae on Sappho.

The problem of knowing a language at an intermediate level

Here in Lefkás I can read Greek at a suitable level to get by and this includes some social media posts too. This is a great achievement for me.

However, this does not extend to a cashier wildly gesticulating her arms about in the guise of some kind of transfer. She was pointing in the direction of the cabbages that I had bought but since I’d already paid and they were already in bags I had no clue what she wanted. I said to her that I didn’t understand but my fatal error was that I said this in English. This causes them to lose all interest in you and then the transaction is done after a cursory goodbye.

It’s so sad that this happens after I had been polite by greeting her and even giving her money after she told me the total in Greek. I didn’t know the word for cabbage since you so rarely get them here but those that are interested google says it’s λάχανο.

It’s disappointing that the only time that the young populace lose the power of speech, is when they are confronted by an English person. They (the English) have tried to learn your language (Greek) but you have used something unknown to them. Suddenly being more interested in your colleague doesn’t help the situation as you clearly wanted to communicate something but were too bloody stubborn to explain! It’s called customer service. Just because I’m English does not entitle you to pretend that you don’t understand me. I know you do so please help me out next time. I don’t need to learn your language but I have because I wanted to. Don’t make me regret my decision.

How to overcome irrational language fears

https://blog.thelinguist.com/the-mind-the-brain-and-language-learning

For the longest time I had an irrational fear of offending people with my language skills. To this day I don’t speak if I can get away with it. This is due to my childhood but also many subsequent incidents. However, this does not mean I am incapable of speech or that I don’t understand other people when they speak. I’m slowly overcoming all of my childhood fears about being inadequate and growing into the adult I’m meant to be. If I can do it then surely everyone else can also accomplish all that they set out to do. It just takes time and patience as well as hard work. These are not always around in a great abundance. Therefore we have to make the most of the resources we have. With the desire to change you can achieve much more than just having the talent for something. Attitude and motivation are key factors here.

This is inspired by one of Bogdan ‘s many questions on the blog over at Pointless Overthinking . You should check out the daily question that turns up about 6pm. It may vary where you are but it’s always at the same time without fail. It’s one of the constants of blogging here on WordPress along with several articles by Cristian Mihai as he does have 4 blogs.

To be like everyone else or not? – Reblog

https://quirkydragon.wordpress.com/2019/04/08/to-be-or-not-to-be-mainstream/

This is another person that I like to read as they post about intellectual topics that don’t get enough coverage on here. They are often in depth articles do you gotta be in it for the long haul.

None of this tldr bs.

Is there any blogs that you would personally recommend I read?

How to increase your attention reblog

https://mathias-sager.com/2019/04/08/increasing-the-attention-span/

This is yet another series of blogs that I have been digesting recently. This is also quite the mammoth undertaking so be prepared for the time investment required to properly appreciate what is written here.

If you were to write at length, what would be your topic of choice?

Verbal triggers

I can speak Greek but I need certain triggers to be able to say what I know and actually communicate with people. If the right situation doesn’t occur then that program doesn’t get loaded and we get nowhere. I also have to like/care about you or want to impress/show off to you. If your not interesting to me in some way then forget about it. I’m gonna make my excuses and leave where possible.

This is true of me in English too. I’m entirely capable of having a conversation about anything here but I just have to be motivated sufficiently to do so. Otherwise I’m probably not going to say a word and if forced well you better like bad jokes.

Have you ever come across these types of scenarios before?

Ελλάδα μου αγάπη

Σήμερα αποφάσισα να γράψω μια θέση με μια διαφορά να πω ευχαριστώ όλους γιατί με παρακολουθήσατε αλλά και για τις 1000 αρετές! Έχω επίσης υποψηφιότητα για ένα βραβείο μυστηρίου blogger και μου ζητήθηκε να δώσω μια γραπτή συνέντευξη για μια ομάδα στο Facebook στην οποία είμαι μέλος. Αισθάνομαι μάλλον χαρούμενος και χαλαρός τώρα που πηγαίνω σύντομα στην Ελλάδα για διακοπές εργασίας. Δεδομένου ότι είναι η πρώτη ημέρα του Απριλίου, αυτό γράφεται εξ ολοκλήρου χρησιμοποιώντας το google translation για να καταδείξει γιατί δεν πρέπει να το κάνετε αυτό και γιατί δεν γράφω στα ελληνικά. Για όσους από εσάς καταλαβαίνουν τα ελληνικά, πόσο καλά κάνει το google;

How to enable a more inclusive world

Here inside this video are thoughts on the impression that language makes on your thoughts. It can get quite technical at times drawing from psychology but this does explain how our thoughts come to be in the shapes that they are presented to us in. Language colours our perception as beautifully explained with the key talk as you will see when you watch the clip.

How have your linguistic experiences been shaped by the languages you have come into contact with?

Longevity

  • Do you have what it takes to commit to blogging?

    • Are you prepared to blog continually no matter what happens in your life?
    • If you are not then why are you starting a blog in the first place?
    • Are you going to stop blogging when you come across the first hurdle ie you become disheartened?
    • If you do then why did you create your blog?
    • Are you one of those that thinks a blog is a get rich quick scheme?
  • If you are then your going to be sorely disappointed.

  • Making a successful blog takes a lot of time, patience and hard work. You have to :-

    1. write well,
      write about interesting topics,
      write in an engaging manner,
write so that you connect with your audience and
write in your own authentic way.
  • This is a tall order to do all of those things but you have to persevere. Everyone knows that anything worth doing isn’t easy.
  • In fact it is the most worthwhile moments in our lives that scare us the most. The life defining events like our marriages or the birth of our children terrify us to our very core as we are never sure we are ready but we overcome all obstacles in our path.
  • What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
  • I may be starting to sound rather cliche here with all of these maxims but there true and have passed the test of time.
  • We all know how to live our best lives but occasionally we need help to keep ourselves on that path. It takes courage to admit we need assistance and that we are not flawless. When we open ourselves to the fact that our egos do not define us and in fact are holding us back. Then we can progress and make the world a better place.
  • I plan on using this motivation to continue my blog and not to quit.
  • How are you planning to keep your blog going through thick and thin?

    The philosophy of WestWorld

This tv show is the philosophical successor to the Matrix. This show is so amazing in how it captures your attention and makes you think so deeply about what is real and what is worthy of your attention. It strips away all artifice and lays bare who you really are at your core. I dare you to watch this show and not be transformed after viewing it. It’s a good way to analyse your own psyche without having to under go hypnosis, meditation or even go as as far as visiting a retreat or taking transcendental drugs.

To examine what is real and what is not is a very Buddhist way of thinking. Becoming one with yourself and seeking the true path to enlightenment is quite some task. This is what religion has tried to inspire in us over the millennia to varying degrees of success. Since it is so difficult to achieve and none is ever sure how to do it or what happens when it has been achieved. Numerous books have been written on the subject with their own version of attaining self actualisation. I believe we all try to attain this state at some point in our lives. We just differ in our methods of attempting this process.

I believe my way of entering this trance state is every time I watch a programme that commands my entire attention. This is rare that I enter this flow state but it is beautiful. I feel reborn and that I am connected to everything in the universe. I know that everything is going to be fine because I am at peace with the world. The state of catharsis is the most blissful feeling you can have. It is the absence of feeling but also a complete and utter fulfilment. So you are full of the most magnificent cleanliness. It is difficult to describe the fullness and emptiness at the same time.

This is however when we are at our most free and at our most creative. When we connect to ourselves and our very being it is a marvellous thing to behold. We need to hold on to this higher state of being for as long as possible as we all want to reach nirvana one day and to remain for as long as possible if not for eternity.

Since we are currently in both catholic and orthodox Lent, it is fortuitous that I am currently feeling that way and it’s only just begun. The whole purpose of this time is to get to get closer to the most pure version of ourselves. When we purify through lack of stimulants both external and internal; we open our minds and bodies to the possibility of greatness. When we stop all the different versions of ourselves that we need for our daily lives and become the one that is the crux of our being; then we can rise above everything and be the very best version of ourselves. In doing so we can help all those around in their personal quests too. For a healthy community nourishes the land, life and everything.

Have you ever thought you would be able to achieve such a state of peace?

    Wishing you all well,

    Angela

How to deal with the torture of your own mind

    http://cristianmihai.net/2019/03/10/heaven-or-hell-now-or-later/

Once again Cristian Mihai has managed to out do himself and wrote the most amazing blog post ever. Sometimes I feel like he knows me and my life which is impossible as we’ve never met and I doubt we ever will. At times he knows exactly what is on my mind which is extraordinarily difficult even for myself. He has a very good way with words. He is able to present his points in a much more user friendly approach than I can. Maybe because he is not English but I do write how I talk. I am a thesaurus Hahahaha.

On things you know but don’t realise

There are lots of words around that are part Greek and part Latin. These were both the languages of scholars so it’s almost like they couldn’t decide which was better and compromised a lot of the time.

Today I came across an article about the aurora borealis and it explained that this comes from both Greek and Latin. Aurora meaning dawn and borealis being the word for north. Hence we have the northern lights

Another instance that is popular in today’s culture is that of polyamory. This has poli from Greek which means many here and amory which is Latin. That stands for love. So a polyamorous person loves and engages with many people. This label is an ongoing joke within the community because the scientists who come up with this monikers are so indecisive.

However, it would make more sense if they didn’t chop and change the language these terms came from in the first place. There needs to be rules to follow but right now everything seems to be in a state of flux as everything seems permissible.

It happens to me quite frequently that I know certain well known and familiar concepts but until it’s explicitly pointed out, the realisation is not apparent to me. It doesn’t click and you don’t get that aha moment!

It also makes me think that children are constantly questioning everything, trying to figure out why things are the way they are but as adults we accept the status quo and just go along with our daily lives. Children have a lot of common sense as they don’t understand the social reasons for a lot of what they do. They just do things in the simplest and easiest way. We have to remember to not remove their innovative ways in the quest to teach them the ways of the world. We also have to accept that there ways may actually be better.

Language is a good area to demonstrate this as it’s forever evolving. Us as adults try to control everything as we think we know best being more experienced and worldly wise but this is not always true. Letting go is important for true freedom from the constraints that hold us back.

Can you come up with any examples that have shared linguistic roots? Or perhaps you have a similar scenario to share with us today?

    Reasons for and against monetisation

I watched this video and she brings up some amazing points. These are things we all know and we all do yet we powerless to prevent them. It’s autonomy that we all crave and control. The ability to decide for ourselves what we are going to do when, how and also why. We can all live richer lives but without the riches that we think we need to do so. She draws upon Ancient wisdom but also the knowledge we learn growing up and foolishly discard as being outdated. We need money but not as much as we think. It’s about learning that self discipline and if we cannot planning accordingly so that we never run out of money.

This is the first video that deals with making money and my issues with this :-

    Connection

    www.youtube.com/watch

While I don’t have this condition, I have experienced the forgetting people’s faces and names many a time. They are never happy about this fact and then you have an embarrassing conversation about how this is a common occurrence for you and you don’t know how to fix it. In truth I don’t think there is a universal fix for this and you just have to muddle along.
